マレーシアの選挙の件、今日ペナン出身の人と会って話をできたこともあって
改めてブログに書きたいと思います。

マレーシアでは新聞やテレビ等のmain stream mediaには与党の息がかかっており、
野党の話題は殆ど扱われず、長年野党は非常に弱い立場にありました。

ところが今回の選挙(3/8）では、野党がブログやYouTube等のネットを利用して声をあげ、
下院総選挙では野党陣営が222議席中82議席を獲得し、勢力を拡大。
同時に行われた州議会選でも、野党が13州のうち5州を押さえました。

Malaysia opposition win shows power of cyberspace

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's weak opposition was up
against a hostile mainstream media and restrictive campaign rules, but
it can chalk up much of its stunning success in Saturday's election to
the power of cyberspace.

Voters exasperated with the unvarnished support of the mainstream media
for the ruling National Front furiously clicked on YouTube and posted
comments with popular bloggers about tales of sex, lies and videotapes
in the run-up to Saturday's election.

最も顕著だったペナンでは、与党連合は13議席中11の議席を失い、
州では40年続いた与党支配に終わりを告げ、40議席中29議席を失いました。

The swing that caught everyone by surprise

 The Barisan loss in Penang was devastating. The once invincible coalition had lost 11 of the 13 parliamentary seats it contested. At the state level, it lost 29 out of a total of 40 seats.

It was a sudden and stunning end to almost 40 years of Barisan rule in this state.

マレーシア政府、野党支援ブロガーに警告

3月8日に総選挙を控えたマレーシアで、同国政府はインターネット上のブログで野党に好意的な書き込みを行っているブロガーらを非難し、今後も書き込みを監視していくと警告した。

報道によると、アザリナ・オスマン（Azalina Othman）青年スポーツ相は、こうしたブログの書き込みは内務省が主要メディアしか監視していないとみた野党がメッセージ発信に利用しているものだとして、このようなブロガーは「腰抜けで与党にとって不愉快な存在だ」と非難した。

　

マレーシア政府は以前からブロガーに対し、状況によっては国内治安法に基づき裁判なしで拘束すると警告している。

　

マレーシアの主要紙やテレビ局のほとんどが与党系の選挙関連報道で独占され、野党の活動が取り上げられることはほとんどない。

　その他の主要メディアでも検閲が厳しいことから、ブログやSMS（ショートメッセージサービス）、動画投稿サイトユーチューブ（YouTube）などが野党の選挙活動の拠りどころだ。野党は、こうしたインターネットサービスを活用し、若者や知識層、都市部の有権者などに向けてメッセージを積極的に発信している。

Jeff Ooi は元コピーライターで有名なブログ "Screenshots" を運営するブロガー。
中国系の野党DAPに、DAPの "e-campaign"のリーダーに任命され、
勝利に導くとともに自らもペナンで議席を獲得。ロイター記事より引用

Government backers doubt whether bloggers turned opposition
politicians could make their presence felt. "Beyond the major cities
like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, there's not much the bloggers can really
hope to accomplish," says Mohamad Norza Zakaria, a leader in Prime
Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's UMNO party ( www.umno-online.com )

The Chinese-backed DAP, by contrast, appointed blogger Ooi to head the party's "e-campaign."

汚職／民族問題／セックススキャンダル等、色々なことがYouTubeで暴露されました。

与党のBadruddin bin Amiruldinが「マレーシアはイスラム教国だ。嫌なら出て行け」
"Malaysia is an Islamic state,You don't like it, you get out of Malaysia!"と叫んでいる映像を流され、
マレーシアはイスラム教徒が多いとはいえ中国人やインド人などが1/3をしめるため、
彼らの反感を買ったそうです。

また、1月にhealth ministerがYouTubeにアップされた映像によるセックススキャンダルで辞任。

残念ながら落選しましたが、89歳の資金の乏しいおばあさんが
Facebookのプロフィールを作り、ブログを書き、選挙運動を行ったという話も。ロイター記事より引用：

Even a barely literate 89-year-old grandmother running for parliament with little money and only a bicycle to get around on, hopped the cyberspace bandwagon with a Facebook profile and her own blog, courtesy of some Internet savvy supporters. Mamin Yusuf, however, lost. It wasn't clear how many of her potential voters were hooked up to the Internet in northeastern Terengganu.
